Volvo - Clean Trucks
At WorkforClimate, we believe employees can play a powerful role in shaping their company’s climate leadership. We’re a not-for-profit initiative that helps people inside major companies push for stronger, faster action on climate.
Right now, one of our priorities is accelerating the global transition to electric trucks. We’re partnering with Volvo employees who want to see their company move faster toward a cleaner, healthier future.
Why this matters
Despite making up just 3% of vehicles on the road, diesel trucks produce 30% of global emissions - the second biggest source of road transport emissions. They are also a major contributor of local air pollution that tends to harm marginalised communities the most - and truck drivers themselves.
The demand for trucks is also projected to grow significantly, but unlike the car market where the EV transition is well underway, the truck sector is the furthest behind in electrification. In 2024, electric trucks were just 2.2% of truck sales in Europe.
The good news is, this represents an opportunity for outsized impact. Rapid vehicle electrification could reduce climate pollution by 73% by 2050. The technology for electric trucks is well-proven, and trucks makers have the resources to catalyse and accelerate the transition.

Why Volvo?
- Huge climate and health impacts: Diesel trucks are just 3% of vehicles but cause 86% of NOx emissions and 30% of transport CO₂ emissions, contributing to air pollution, premature deaths, and climate change
- Public commitments vs. reality: Volvo has pledged that half of its new trucks will be electric by 2030. Yet so far, only 1.7% of trucks delivered are electric – far short of where it needs to be.
- Policy pushback: Despite positioning itself as a climate leader, Volvo is part of industry groups lobbying against stronger truck emissions standards in the US and EU.
- Market position - Volvo is one of the world’s largest truck makers - 26% market share in Europe, 15% in the US, so Volvo’s leadership could really make a difference.
Good jobs for clean trucks
Volvo’s choices on electrification will determine the security, quality, and future of jobs in the trucking industry. A successful transition to electric could create millions of jobs and ensure workers are better paid. Diesel trucks damage our climate, pollute local communities, and create economic uncertainty. The urgent shift to electric trucks gives us the chance to rebuild this industry for the future. As an employee, your voice matters in this transition. Whether you work at the headquarters, on assembly lines, or anywhere in the supply chain, you deserve a seat at the table.
Why we’re engaging Volvo employees
Volvo says it wants to lead, but current action doesn’t match the ambition. That’s where you come in. Change happens faster when employees speak up inside the company. As diesel production winds down, you need to be part of the shift to electric.
We’re looking for allies on the inside who share our vision of Volvo as a true climate leader.
Together, we want to co-create an action plan to:
- Help Volvo accelerate electrification and deliver on its promises.
- Ensure the company doesn’t fall behind competitors already moving faster.
- Build a healthier, more sustainable transport future for its employees, customers and communities.
